Manali


Manali at an altitude of 2,050 m (6,726 ft) in the Beas River is a hill station nestled in the mountains of state of Himachal Pradesh. It is located 270 km  north of the state capital, Shimla. Some of the earliest inhabitants of the region are the 'naur' or 'nar', which is a caste unique to the Kullu valley. Only a few naur families are known to exist now. A naur family in the village Soyal near Haripur on the west bank of Manali was famous for the vast land they owned and their practice of having 'rakshas' as their labourers. The landscape here is breath taking. One sees well defined snow capped peaks, the Beas river with its clear water meanders through the town. It is an excellent place for a holiday and also a favorite resort for trekkers. From temples to antiquity, to picturesque sight-seeing spots and adventure activities, Manali is a popular resort in all seasons and for all travellers.

Hadimba temple

Hidimbi Devi Temple, is an ancient cave temple dedicated to Hidimbi Devi, sister of Hidimba,who was a character in the Indian epic, Mahābhārata. Located 1.5 km north of the main bazaar is the sacred by a grove of stately depdars.This four tiered wooden temple with its pagoda style roof was built in 1553.


Solang valley

Solang Nala (Valley) drives its name from combination of words Solang (Nearby village) and Nullah (water stream). It is 14 km from downtown Manali, is the scene of most of the area’s outdoor activities. Treks lead up to the pastures of Dhumti and the small snow fed lake of Beas Kund.


Rohtang pass

Rohtang Pass lit. meaning pile of corpses, due to people dying in bad weather trying to cross the pass (altitude 3,978 m or 13,051 ft), is a high mountain pass on the eastern Pir Panjal Range of the Himalayas around 51 km from Manali. It is a day’s excursion, possible only in summer, with a brief halt at the spectacular Rahalla Falls along the way.


Naggar

A lovely village set on a hill sourrounded by forests, was the capita of kullu in the 16th century and the monuments in the region are witness to its glorious past. The Naggar Castle, a stone and wood structure built by Raja Sidh singh over 500 years ago, has been converted in to a heritage hotel. It is an excellent example of traditional local architecture with walls composed of alternate layers of wooden beams and evenlyhewn stone.
