About Keylong

Keylong is located 126 km north of Manali and 120 km from the Indo-Tibetan border. It is situated at a height of 3440 m and is the most populated place in Lahaul region. It is along the Manali-Leh Highway, Keylong is one of the wonderful hill places and a beautiful tourist destination of Himachal Pradesh. The capital of Lahaul stretches along one side of the green Bhaga Valley just below the Manali–Leh Highway, Keylong, popularly known as the ‘Land of Monasteries’, is at an elevation of 3350 m above sea level. Among the white and brown mountain in the region Keylong stands out as oasis of greenery in the district. Keylong lies on the bank of Bhaga River where Chandra Valley, Bhaga Valley and Chenab Valley intersect. Renowned author Rudyard Kipling described the place as “it is surely the God live here; this is not the place for men.” Keylong follows Buddhism culture and every festive celebration includes participation of Lamas and monks. The annual festival Lahaul festival celebrated in July is quite famous among Buddhist and locals. The festival is celebrates with a big, bustling market and various cultural activities. Dancing activities are the prime necessity of the celebration. The traditional dances reflect the diversity and distinctive culture of the region. The picturesque landscape is regarded as an ideal retreat for the travelers.

Kardang Gompas

s This 900 years old Kardang Monastery is established during 12th century and is located at an altitude of 3500 m above sea level. Kardang Monastery is an ancient gompa located at a distance of around 5 km from Keylong , on the banks of the river Bhaga. This monastery has an old library, which is known as the largest Buddhist library in the country. The huge statue of Shri Buddha with astonishing paintings and few old prayer drums are special things to watch in Khardong Gompa. The Khardang Monastery reflects the traditional culture and art of the region. It is a picturesque view of the natural surrounding region. Thankas and musical instruments like drums, horns as well as huge statues of the Lord Buddha are considered as the main attractions of the monastery.
