The picturesque town of Ziro in central Arunachal Pradesh, lies in a large flat valley surrounded by low pine-covered hills. The area is popularly known as Apatani Plateau and is home to prosperous Apatani tribe who practice a unique system of cultivation that combines rice growing with pisciculture. The most authentic Apatani villages are Hong (the biggest and best known), Hija (more atmospheric), Hari, Bulla and Dutta. It has been a favorite town for World Heritage Site for a number of years now. Ziro is nearly 150 km from the capital, Itanagar and is located 1500 metres above sea level. It is a beautiful hill station as well as one of the oldest towns of the state. The Ziro Valley is full of uneven hillocks, surrounded by paddy fields. The area is rich in biological diversity owing to the wide variety of flora and fauna. Ziro also have festival of Music and is probably the most fun outdoor music festival in the country. Ziro is famous for bamboo items like bamboo baskets, Apatani handlooms and locally made handicraft items.

Talley Valley Wildlife Sanctuary

The Talley Valley Wildlife Sanctuary is known as a biodiversity zone and located 32 km north east of Ziro. It is one of the famous attractions of Ziro that houses a diverse range of flora and fauna including trees like orchids, ferns and different varieties of bamboo. The sanctuary is spread over an area of 337 square kilometers and positioned at an altitude of 2400 meters. This sanctuary offers abode to several endangered species like clouded leopards. Near the Talley Valley Wildlife Sanctuary there is a camp known as Talle camp which is about 30 kilometres from Ziro.  Ziro is denoted as a headquarters of Lower Subansiri district. 


Apatani Villages

It is really a unique experience to meet the friendly Apatani tribal folk, who have facial tattoos and wear nose plugs in their villages. The best villages to visit are Hong and Bulla. All these villages are within a 10 km radius and with guide along, you will be able to see much more. Their wet rice cultivation system requires intensive labor, performed without farm animals or machines. The Apatani maintain their traditions by remembering their legendary and mythical beginnings. Although many Apatani work professional occupations outside their region, they return to practice traditional ways especially during holiday celebrations. Stroll along the villages and interact with the tribe. 


Craft Centre & Emporium

Located on the main road near the town, here one can see and buy local artifacts like wall painting, traditional costumes made of natural vegetable and herbal dye yarns and also attractive utility items made of cane and bamboo. It has got textiles displayed in the form of costumes, bags and hence displaying the arts and crafts of the people of Arunachal Pradesh.
