Periyar

Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary, Thekkady is an example of nature's bounty, rich bio diversity with great scenic charm and providing veritable visitor satisfaction. Spread over an area of 777 Sq kms, Periyar is one of the 27 tiger reserves in India. In 1935, the then Maharaja of Travancore declared 600 sq. km of forest surrounding the lake a wildlife sanctuary. It was founded as Nellikkampatty Game Reserve and was consolidated as a wildlife sanctuary in 1950 after the political integration of India. Periyar wildlife sanctuary has a picturesque lake at the heart of the sanctuary which now forms the nucleus of the ecosystem of the sanctuary which over the years, has been expanded to 777 sq. kms. Formed with the building of a dam in 1895, this reservoir meanders around the contours of the wooded hills, providing a permanent source of water for the local wildlife. People oriented and park centered community based ecotourism is the hallmark of Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary. This sanctuary, declared as a Tiger Reserve in 1978, is a rare example of human interference having enhanced rather than damaged an ecosystem. The former hunting lodge of Maharaja is now a hotel inside the sanctuary. The vast region is home to bison, sambar, wild boar, langur, elephants and few tigers.  The Periyar forest of Thekkady is one of the finest wildlife reserves in India and spread across the entire district are picturesque plantations and hill towns that hold great opportunities for treks and mountain walks. Apart from elephants, other animals also seen in the Periyar sanctuary are Gaur, Sambar, Barking Deer, Mouse Deer, Dole or Indian Wild Dog and very rarely, a Tiger. There are, now estimated counts of 40 tigers in the Periyar National Park. Tourists can find tremendous ways to catch the wilderness of the sanctuary as the availability of Jeep Safari, elephant safari and most charming boat cruises at Periyar Lake will bring the wildlife experience more rewarding. Best season to visit Periyar wildlife sanctuary is from October to June.
