A picturesque little town of Munnar lies at a height of about 1800m, in a part of the Western Ghats known as the High Ranges. Set at an altitude of 6000 ft in Idukki district, Munnar is a Hill station and was the favored summer resort of the erstwhile British rulers in the colonial days. The name 'Munnar' (which means 'Three Rivers' in Tamil) is derived from its location at the confluence of three mountain streams – Kundala, Mudrapuzha and Nallathanni. The strobilanthus shrub ('Neelakurinji' in local language Malayalam), a blue flower which blooms only every 12 years, is found in this region and was bloomed last in December 2006. South India's largest tea-growing region, picture-book towns, winding lanes and holiday facilities make this a popular resort town.
The rolling high-altitude grasslands, a striking contrast to the dense sholas or tropical montane forests of the valles are unique to the mountain landscape of the Western Ghats. Eravikulam national park is spread over an extensive area of 97 sq. km in the high ranges of Idukki district. Located 15 km from Munnar, it is one of most important tourist destinations in Kerala. The park has a rare collection of varieties of trees and shrubs. You can find here climax grasslands. The national park is managed by the Kerala Department of Forest and Wildlife, Munnar. The national park is divided into three areas - the core area, the buffer area and the tourism area. In which, the Rajamalai is known to be the tourism area of the park.
It is 13 km north of Munnar and is surrounded by lovely semi alpine scenery. A specialized cattle-breeding centre is located nearby. Nestled inside the hills of Munnar and very near to the Anamudi peak lies Mattupetty, the hill station at a height of 1,700 m. Here one can enjoy the greenish valleys and feel the fabulous climate around. The main attraction of Mattupetty is the dam and the lake here. The most attractive part of Mattupetty dam is its still water which reflects the tea garden around. Mattupetty is also known as 'cattle village', the name which came from the famous Indo Swiss farm project or Livestock project.
With the height of 2695 meters above sea level and an hour drive from Munnar is Anaimudi Mountain. The The highest peak in the Western Ghats, Anamudi provides a panoramic view of Mother Nature with scent and sight of tea plantations running across both sides of the road and gigantic mountains. Known as the 'Himalayas of southern India' and 'Elephant Head', the Anaimudi Peak and its enviros provide good hiking territory. It is part of of Eravikulam National Park and lies between Cardamon hills, Palni hills and Annamalai hills.
