The village of Kumarakom is a cluster of little islands on the Vembanad Lake, and is part of the Kuttanad region. Kumarakom is relaxed and refined, featuring lush flowery landscapes and a multi coloured plethora of bird species, best enjoyed at the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary. The bird sanctuary here, which is spread across 14 acres is a favourite haunt of migratory birds and an ornithologist's paradise. It has distinction of being the first ever fully literate municipal town in India. It is glide along an intricate web of lagoons, lakes and rivers on a fully-staffed private houseboat. An enchanting backwater destination, Kumarakom offers visitors many other leisure options like Boating and fishing facilities. Panoramic backwater stretches, lush paddy fields, highlands and extensive rubber plantations characterize this pictureseque land which attracts hordes of tourists. Kumarakom is vast network of rivers and canals which empty into the great expanse of water called the Vembanad Lake. It is the longest lake in India and the largest lake in the state of Kerala. The Vembanad Lake is approximately 14 kilometres wide at its widest point. The celebrated Nehru Trophy Boat Race is conducted in a portion of this lake. The lake, an enchanting picnic spot and a fast developing backwater tourism destination, provides boating, fishing and sightseeing experiences that are truly exhilarating.

Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary located on the banks of the Vembanad Lake, an ornithologist’s paradise, is a favourite haunt of migratory birds. The Egrets, darters, herons, teals, waterfowls, cuckoo, wild duck and migratory birds like the Siberian Stork visit here in flocks and are a fascinate the visitors. the bird sanctuary is spread across 14 acres. Pathiramanal (sands of midnight), an enchanting island on the lake, can be accessed by boat from here. Houseboats and motorboats are available on hire for bird watching cruises on the lake.

A mud path from Kumarakom leads to Aruvikkuzhi waterfalls. At the end of this 2 km trail is the waterfall, which is a popular sightseeing spot. At Aruvikkuzhi, water cascades down about 100 ft from a rocky terrain that make irregular noise and is mainly connected with various streams. Refreshingly scenic surrounding is ideal for picnics and also for shooting of movies. It has wooded landscape and streams. This waterfall is surrounded by large rubber plantations that provide shade to travellers. Maramala Waterfalls and an old church are also situated near the Aruvikkuzhi Waterfalls.
