Agra is a city on the banks of the river Yamuna, 363 kilometres west of the state capital, Lucknow and 200 kilometres south of the national capital New Delhi. The city is mentioned in the epic Mahabharata, where it was called Agrevaṇa ('the border of the forest'). Legend ascribes the founding of the city to Raja Badal Singh, a Sikarwar Rajput king (c. 1475), whose fort Badalgarh, stood on or near the site of the present Agra fort. Agra city is like a medieval one with narrow lanes and colourful shops. It is a major tourist destination because of its many splendid Mughal era buildings.
It was built by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his wife, Mumtaz Mahal. It’s an image of the Islamic Garden Paradise, an enduring monument of love continually fulfilling beauty in white marble. To the poet Tagore it was "A Tear Drop in the face of eternity". Pietra dura has been extensively used to translate naturalistic forms into decorative patters that complement the majesty of its architecture.

It is also called as the 'Baby Taj' because of its resemblance to Taj Mahal. Itimad-ud-Daula was father-in-law and a principal minister to emperor Jahangir. Nur Jahan, Jahangir’s queen, undertook the construction of her father’s tomb (1622-28) using white marble inlaid with coloured stone.
