The royal house of Mewar is now known as Udaipur. The city has a profusion of palaces, lakes, elaborate gardens, serene temples and festivals. The fairy tale city with its palaces and lakes surrounded by hills, was founded by Maharana Udai Singh in 1559 and became the capital of Mewar after fall of Chittorgarh in 1567. Udaipur is also known as the "Most Romantic City of India" and the "Kashmir of Rajasthan". The landscape around Udaipur is dotted with crafts villages. It is also one of Rajasthan’s great centers of contemporary art, as well as of miniature paintings.
Located on the east bank of the Lake Pichola, City Palace is a fascinating combination of Rajput military architecture and Mughal style decorative techniques. Built on hill top, it is considered as largest of its type in Rajasthan and gives a panoramic view of the city and its surrounding, including that of Lake Palace, Jag Mandir on another island in the lake, Jagdish Temple close to the palace, Monsoon Palace on top of an overlooking hillock.
The delightful 18th century retreat in the north of the city has ornamental fountains, a lotus pool and marble elephants. Sahelion Ki Bari' was laid for a group of forty eight young maids who accompanied a queen as part of her dowry.
Built in 1620, it has lush gardens and marble chambers. Eight stone elephants stand solemn at its entrance. Jag Mandir is a beautiful palace located on the southern island of Lake Pichola. This three storied Palace is a palatial structure made in yellow sandstone and marble.
Lake Pichola is the most popular of Udaipur's man-made lake. It was built in 1362 AD by Banjara. The surrounding of lake and the several islands within the lake have been developed over the centuries, with palaces, marble temples, bathing ghats, family mansions and chabutaras.
