Sawai Madhopur is a home to the Ranthambore National Park and the historic Ranthambore Fort a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which lies within the national park. Sawai Madhopur is famous for its guavas, affectionately known as "Madhopur guavas" in Rajasthan. Ranthambore National Park is one of the largest national parks in northern India and it is situated 14 km from Sawai Madhopur and about 180 km from Jaipur district of Rajasthan state. It was first founded as the Sawai Madhopur Game Sanctuary by the Government of India in 1955 but however, in 1973, it was pronounced as one of the 'Project Tiger' reserves in India and ultimately in 1980 it was made a National Park. It lies on the junction of Aravali and Vindhyas and the scenery changes dramatically from gentle and steep slopes of the Vindhyas and sharp and conical hills of the Aravali. The place is considered as one of the best to view the powerful Indian Tiger in the jungle. Once known as the hunting base for Maharajas of Jaipur, Ranthambore National Park today is a major tourist destination of many wildlife lover and photographers. It sprawls over a varying and undulating landscape. The park covers a core area of 275 sq km (106 sq miles). It also has the dominating architecture of Ranthambhor Fort (built in the 10th century) which adds to its landscape and also the park derives its name from this great forest fort. Its razor sharp ridges, deep boulder-filled gorges, lakes and jungles are the habitat of carnivores such as the caracal, panther, jackal and hyena, deer and variety of resident and migratory birds. The most famous resident however is the endangered tiger and it is a unique experience to catch glimpses of this majestic animal. As this is the sole park all across the world where the richest concentrations of animals occur, it is known for its healthy tiger population and frequent fatal human-tiger interactions and poaching. To explore the varied topography and wander through the flora and fauna of the Ranthambore National Park the best way to experience same is on Open Jeep Safari or Canter Safari. The famous wildlife sanctuary is open for tourism from 1st of October to 30th June every year.
