Home India North India Rajasthan Mount Abu
It is the only hill station in Rajasthan and a unique destination for adventure and eco tourism. Mount Abu is situated at the southern tip of the Aravali range, the hill retreat owes its cool climate to its rich flora covering the entire hillside that includes coniferous trees and flowering shrubs. During the period of the Maharaja's, it was used as a place of leisure by the royalties and semi-royalties. The place presents an interesting contrast of British style bungalows and holiday lodges of the royals (Thikhana) with various tribal communities residing amidst the thick lush forest on the hills surrounding the region. Mount Abu is both a popular hill resort as well as a place of pilgrimage since the famous Dilwara Jain temples are located here. The flora and fauna enjoys the adulation of the tourist to the fullest. The highest point of the Aravali is the 'Guru Shikhar' with a vast sanctuary that shelters a number of species like langur, wild boars, Sambar, leopards and many more along with a number of flowering plants and trees, which enhance the beauty of the whole scenery.

Located at a distance of just 2.5 kilometers from Mount Abu, the Dilwara Jain temples were built between the 11th and the 13th century. The beautifully carved temples are sheer elegance in marble, dedicated to the Jain Tirthankaras. Dilwara Jain Temples is one of the finest Jain temple known world over for its extraordinary architecture and marvelous marble stone carvings. The feature that makes it a must visit is the amazing and brilliant use of marble in the architecture. The ornamental carvings and the flawless stone laying technique make it one among the most beautiful pilgrimage spots in the world. It seems fairly basic temple from outside but every cloud has a silver lining, the temple interior showcases the extraordinary work of human craftsmanship at its best.

One of the most popular attractions in mount Abu, Nakki Lake is an ancient and sacred lake. the place is a great spot for picnic with friends and family alike. A tiny lake, picturesquely set amid hills. The lake islets are approachable by a boat. Set in the heart of the town, the lake gets its name from the legend that it was scooped out by the gods with their finger nails or ‘Naka’. The various trek spots near the lake sated my hunger for some adventure and the boating trips were relaxing under the amazing weather I experienced here. Nakki Lake as a holy lake and worship it, Nakki lake is also the only Indian artificial lake situated at a height of 1200 Mtr's above sea level. There are plenty of hotels, restaurants and eateries located near the lake which offer some great local food at really cheap prices. The fountains in the lake add to its natural beauty.

Guru Shikar is the highest point in mount Abu and forms the highest point in the Aravalli mountain range. Gurushikhar holds the honor of being not only the highest peak of Mount Abu but the whole of Aravali mountain range. The place is perfect to get a panoramic view of the whole region and is famous for its temple of Guru Dattatreya an incarnation of the Hindu Deities ‘Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva’ in one. While many wouldn’t find much in this place apart from the various temples and the amazing views, it was quiet natural to me to take out my trusty paperback and get lost in the enticing plot amidst the enchanting surroundings. Situated at a height of 1722 meters from the sea-level, Gurushikar provides a breathtaking panoramic view of Mount Abu town and green aravali range.
