Jodhpur is the second largest city in Rajasthan. The Rathors of Kannauj in Uttar Pradesh moved to Marusthal, the blazing desert land in the heart of Rajasthan. Their land came to be called as Marwar. In 1459 Roa Jodha founded Jodhpur. Strategically located on the overland trade route, it soon became a flourishing trade centre. Jodhpur is a popular tourist destination, featuring many palaces, forts and temples, set in the stark landscape of theThar desert.
This hugely impressive fort sits on a mighty rock 120 meters. A fairly steep climb leads up, winding through seven gateways. It is perhaps the most majestic of Rajasthan’s forts. Founded by Rao Jodha in 1459, the sandstone fort was added to by later rulers
It is one of the world's largest private residences. Palace is named after Maharaja Umaid Singh, grandfather of the present owners of the palace. This palace with 347 rooms and built of creamy pink sandstone and marble, is a prime example of princely India. It is still principal residence of the erstwhile Jodhpur royal family. The palace was commissioned by Maharaja Umaid Singh, apparently to create jobs for his famine-stricken subjects.
It is an architectural landmark with elegant pillared white marble memorial built by Maharaja Sardar Singh of Jodhpur State in 1899 in memory of his father, Maharaja Jaswant Singh. Complex of Jaswant Thada is to the left of the Mehrangarh Fort. It is a 19th century royal cenotaph built in commemoration of Maharaja Jaswant Singh II. The Jaswant Thada is a traditional cremation ground of Jodhpur rulers. The grounds also include carved gazebos, a beautiful mulch tiered garden and a small lake.
