Home / India / North India / Punjab / Chandigarh

Chandigarh built in the early 1950s, is capital of both Punjab & Haryana and also a union territory. The city has a pre-historic past. The gently sloping plains on which modern Chandigarh exists, was in the ancient past a wide lake ringed by a marsh. The dream city of India's first Prime Minister, Sh. Jawahar Lal Nehru, it was architect by internationally renowned Le Corbusier. He conceived the city along the lines of a modular man. Chandigarh, also known as `The City Beautiful’, is picturesquely located at the foothills of Shivaliks. The city of Chandigarh was the first planned city in India post-independence in 1947. The city experiences extreme climate and uneven distribution of rainfall. The roads in Chandigarh are surrounded by trees. Chandigarh is the best-planned city in India, with world-renowned architecture and a quality of life, which is unparalleled. It is like seeing a prosperous, comfortable and cosmopolitan city. Each sector of the city is self-contained and pedestrian-friendly.

Tourist Attraction

Capitol complex

Located in Sector 1, capitol complex includes the Secretariat, Assembly and High Court buildings. The three buildings of the Capitol complex stand majestically representing themselves as the temples of democracy of free India. The Capitol area was designed as a great pedestrian plaza with motorized traffic confined to sunken trenches. The complex is planned on a cross axis wherein rigid symmetry has been avoided in placement of various buildings.

Rock garden

Lying opposite the Capitol Complex, the Rock garden is the city’s most popular tourist spots. Located in Sector 1, it is an epitome of creativity and innovation. It is a unique garden that consists of various art objects. But the best part about the rock garden is that each of its artwork has been made by using industrial & urban waste. It was created in 1970s by an exroad inspector, Nek Chand. Rock garden has been established in the form of an open-air exhibition hall. The area encloses a unique 'kingdom', a labyrinth with hills, waterfalls and caves and serried ranks of sculptures crafted from such unlikely material as discarded neon lights, fuse switches, broken crockery and glass.
