Patna is the capital and largest city of the state of Bihar. Patna was founded in 490 BCE by the king of Magadha. Ancient Patna, known as Pataliputra, was the capital of the Magadha Empire under the Haryanka, Nanda, Mauryan, Sunga, Gupta and Pala. The modern city of Patna is situated on the southern bank of the Ganges. Patna history makes a start from the century 600 B.C. Chandragupta Maurya made it his capital in the 4th century A.D.

The Patna Museum houses a First World War cannon, metal and stone sculptures of the Mauryan and Gupta periods, Buddhist sculptures and quaint terracotta figures. A 16 m long fossilised tree is one of its special features.

Adjacent to Har Mandir Sahib, on the bank of the Ganga, is this beautiful mosque built by Parwez Shah, son of Jehangir, when he was the governor of Bihar. It is also called Saif Khan's mosque, Chimmi Ghat mosque and Sangi Masjid.

Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth Guru of the Sikhs, was born in Patna in 1660. The Takht Shri Harimandir Ji Patna Sahib is one of the four sacred holy shrines of the Sikhs. This Gurdwara too, was built by Maharaja Ranjit Singh (1780-1839), the first Maharaja of the Sikh Empire and contains belongings of the Guru and Sikh holy texts.

It is located on the west of Gandhi Maidan in Patna, is a granary and built in 1786 by Captain John Garstin. The monument is spherical in shape, which gives it name ‘Golghar’, meaning ‘Round House’. The base of the edifice is 125 meters in width and its walls are 3.6 meters thick. It has a dual spiral stairway, with 145 steps on each side. The staircase leads to the top of the structure which offer a panoramic view of the city and the River Ganges.
