Mussoorie is a hill station 34 kms from Dehradun and situated at an altitude of 2003 m above sea-level in the Garhwal hills. The name, Mussoorie is derived from plants of 'Mussoorie' which were found in abundance here. In 1820, Captain Young of the British army was influenced by the beauty of this place and made it his residence. After its discovery, this hill station gradually developed as a centre of education, business, tourism and beauty. Mussoorie became hugely popular with the Raj set. The ghosts of that era linger on in the architecture of the churches, libraries, hotels and summer palaces. One of the Raj’s most popular summer retreats. Mussoorie is perched on a horseshoe shaped ridge above the Doon Valley. It is beautiful, undulating, tree-covered hills, looking down on the Doon valley and with a fantastic view of the Mighty Himalayas. Popularly known as the Queen of Hills, this charming hill station is one the beautiful hill stations in India and the most frequently visited.
