Leh was capital of the kingdom of Ladakh, is one of the coldest deserts in the world and is located at a distance of 434 Kms from Srinagar. Leh is located in the Indus river valley at a crossroads of the old trading routes from Kashgar, Tibet, and Kashmir. Leh is now a dream destination of many and specially adventure enthusiasts, offering unique & special adventures in mountaineering, trekking and white water rafting. Rafting options are available on both Indus and Zanskar rivers. The trekking options range from short, day long walks to visit monuments or monastic settlements to long, trans-mountain treks involving also weeks of walking and camping in the wilderness. Leh’s bazaar is dominated by refugee Tibetans and a pleasant place to wander.
One of the places to visit in Leh is the Gravity hill having strong magnetic properties which can pull cars uphill and make Aircrafts go higher in terms of altitude so that they could bypass magnetic interference. The alignment of the road with the slope of the background can give the illusion that cars may drift upwards. The “magnet Hill” is located on the Leh-Kargil-Srinagar national highway, about 30 km from Leh, at a height of 11,000 feet above sea level. On its south side flows the Indus, which originates in Tibet and goes to Pakistan.
The valley is named as “the valley of flowers” and it has some of the most beautiful, vibrant and colourful flowers set amidst lush green landscape. The Nubra Valley lies over the Khardung La, one of the highest motorable roads in the world. Within the valley are the Hundar Sand Dunes, well worth seeing. This place is popular because of its serene and tranquil ambience. Trekking on the rocky, colossal trails of this valley is a truly exciting experience as it is situated near the banks of the pure Nubra river.
It is the most ancient and largest Gompa located near the Nubra valley. The golden Buddha statue which is 32 meters tall is worth seeing. It is located 120 kilometers away from Leh. Diskit Gompa virtually dangles from a rugged crag overlooking the village. It is founded in early 15th century by Stenrap Zangpo a disciple of Tsong Khapa. The main attraction in this gompa are the wrathful guardians and deities to protect the dharma (or spiritual transformation) from harmful spirits.
Shey monastery is located 15 kilometers south of Leh and was built by Ladakh’s king Deldan Namgyal in 1655. It is famous because of the magnificent metal giant copper with gilded gold statue of a seated Shakyamuni Buddha. The royal kings of Ladakh used to stay here during summers.
