Puri District is a coastal district on the eastern part of Odisha, India. This District needs no introduction, being the abode of Lord Vishnu, most popularly known as Lord Jagannath. This District derives its name from the heritage city of Puri, one of the four pilgrimage centres of India. Handicraft and cottage industries of this District is famous the world over, its original source being the temple craft of Lord Jagannath and the Sun Temple at Konark. Puri is known by several names from the ancient times to the present, and locally called as Badadeula. Puri and the Jagannath Temple were invaded 18 times by Hindu and Muslim rulers, starting from the 4th century to the start of the 19th century with the objective of capturing the treasures of the temple. Odisha, including Puri and its temple, were under the British rule from 1803 till India attained independence in August 1947. The rich traditional culture and heritage of the District gives a boost to this industry. The important products of this industry are in, stone carving, patta chitra, wood carving, modern patch work, terracotta, bell metal, and sea shell items etc.

Chilika

Chilika is largest brackish water estuarine Lake of Asia. It sprawls over an area of 1100 Sq. kms. Covering parts of three districts of Odisha i.e. Puri on the East, Khurda on the North and Ganjam on the South. It is the largest coastal lagoon in India and the second largest lagoon in the World. Satapada is one of the most popular tourist places of Odisha. Irrawaddy Dolphins are major attraction of Chilika. It has the second largest congregation of migratory Birds in the world after Lake Victoria in Africa. It is the largest ground for migratory birds on the Indian sub-continent. In Winter the migratory birds come from as far as the Caspian Sea, Lake Baikal, Aral Sea and other parts of Russia, Kirghiz Steppes of Mongolia, Central& South-East-Asia, Ladakh and the Himalayas.


Pipili

The place is famous for Applique works which is a traditional craft of the local People. They prepares Chandua (colorful Arts on clothes), umbrella, cloth bags, purses, wall hangings, carpets, garments for ladies & other applique works which have a good market in India and abroad. During World famous Ratha Yatra, the Chariots (Raths) are being decorated by colorful clothes made by the People of Pipili.


Jagannath Puri

 The majestic temple of Lord Shree Jagannath at Puri is said to have been built by Emperor Anangabhimadeva, historically identified as Angangabhima III belonging to Ganga dynasty. This temple is a magnificent temple from the past and keeps a huge importance in India. Also it is well known for its Rath yatra festival of Jagannath Puri in India. Along with Jagannath, two others namely, Balabhadra and Subhadra are also worshipped here. These three, constitute the basic and fundamental Trinity and are considered to be the forms and manifestations of the omni-present, omni-scient and omni-potent supreme power.
