Phek is district headquarter and home of Chakhesang, which is combination of three tribes: Cha, Khe and Sang of Chokri, Khezha and Sangtam respectively. The Chakhesang tribe’s culture and customs is very different from that of other Nagas. The town is carved out of the district of Kohima on 21st December, 1973, Phek derive its name from the term `Phekrekedze’ which refers to the watch tower. The town is rich in the presence of flora and fauna and is enveloped with wooded hill slopes, The district is drained by the waters of the Rivers Sedzu, Tizu and Lanye. The district of Phek retains the cultural heritage of the land that is reflected in the cultural extravaganzas of Phek.  Other than terrace cultivation, salt making, wood, bamboo carving and weaving are other means of livelihood of the people here. Phek town is famous for colourful festival 'Tsukhenyie'. Phek offers tourist enthusiasts a mixture of both natural beauty and culture.

Shilloi Lake

It is one of the most famous tourist place in Phek. Sillio Lake is a beautiful, charming water body shaped as a footprint. Locally it is also known as the Latsam. Location of this delightful lake makes a visit to it worthwhile, as it is located on the lower slopes of the Patkai Range which borders Myanmar. The lake has an area of 0.25 to 0.30 sq. km and depth of 4 metres. 


Khezhakeno Village

Khezhakeno is a traditional village with history and mythology all mingling and becoming one. As per belief many Naga tribes have originated from this village and migrated to the other parts of the region. According to another popular legend, the village has a stone slab from which paddy miraculously multiply when placed on any drying land. But the magic and the mystery is not there anymore, though the stone is still found in the village. Khezhakeno village can be reached from Tabubi in Manipur or Pfutsero in the Phek with roads as the main communication lifeline to this village and taxis can easily be availed from the above towns. It is about 22 kilometres from the district headquarters of Phek and falls under the jurisdiction of the Pfutsero Tehsil. A visit to this small village in the Phek can be one of the most memorable trips for tourists.


Pfutsero

Pfutsero is located at 2,133 metres above sea level. Pfutsero is considered as the coldest city in Nagaland. The place is famous for Apple farms and is also known for its green vegetables like cabbages, garlics and spring onions. Located at a distance of 70 km from Kohima, the town is inhabited by mostly Khezhas and Chokris (sub-tribes of Chakhesang).  It is a Christian town with almost all the locals being Christians. Buses ply to the town frequently.
