Home India East India Nagaland Kohima
A small pleasant town surrounded by hills, Kohima is a district of Nagaland state and home of the Angami Naga tribe. Kohima is situated at an altitude of 1500 m and the town is located on the top of a high ridge as the town serpentines along the top of the mountain ranges as is typical of most Naga settlements. The city is famous in history for World War II of the decisive battle, fought on the tennis court of the British deputy commissioner’s house, that finally stopped the Japanese advance into India in April 1944. The objective was to reach Dimapur, a vital railhead for supplies to British Army units in forward areas. The name Kohima, was officially given by the British as they could not pronounce the Angami names Kewhima or Kewhira.
Those who fell in the battle are buried in this beautifully kept cemetery covering a terraced hillside. Kohima War Cemetery is situated on the left of the Imphal-Diampur road (Highway 39) close to the centre of the town and lies on the battle ground of Garrison Hill. A heart-rending inscription at the base of one of the two large crosses reads: 'When you go home tell them of us and say, For your tomorrow we gave our today'.
It is located 2 km north of the bazaar on Bayavu Hill and has an excellent anthropological collection of Naga masks, jewellery, textiles, totem pillars from all the 16 Naga tribes. The art gallery also showcases the Naga Morung, which are the hut models that display variance of architecture between the tribes. Musical instruments made of bamboo and buffalo horns are also on display here. The museum is known as one of the major attractions in Kohima as well as of Nagaland. Tourists visiting this museum can see the tribal habitats that are pre-dominant in the eastern territories of India.
A very beautiful place to visit, Cathedral of Reconciliation overlooks the cemetery. It was built in 1995 and was funded by Japanese government. A great place for tourists to offer prayers and do meditation; this is the largest Cathedral of North East India. Its façade is shaped in line with the traditional Naga House. The Cathedral’s architectural might and complexity is a surprise as this semicircular building with its modern architectural thinking covers one side of the Armature hill with every bit of construction planned in details, providing no space to be wasted.
