'The City of Eternal Romance', Tezpur is 180 km away from Guwahati. The name Tezpur is derived from the Sanskrit words 'Teza' (meaning blood) and 'Pura' (meaning town or city). The city acquired its name owing to a myth involving one of the rulers of Tezpur. Tezpur, a city and the administrative headquarters of Sonitpur district in the state of Assam is a picturesque town on the north bank of the Brahmaputra river, It is an ancient city surrounded by undulating green valleys covered with tea gardens. Tezpur is a convenient stop and a take-off point for trips to parts of Arunachal Pradesh. Tezpur is a charming city that boasts a handful of beautifully kept parks, attractive lakes and it’s also called as the ‘Cultural Capital of Assam‘. The tourists flock the place to enjoy and absorb the beauty of its scenic attractions.
Also known as Chitralekha Udyan, it is Tezpur’s prettiest and famous tourist spot. Located in one of the most beautiful and legendary places of Assam, it was established in 1906 by Mr. Cole, a Commissioner of Assam under British rule. It was later renovated by Mr. M.G.V.K. Bhanu, the deputy Commissioner of Tezpur, in 1996. Cole Park is a beautifully landscaped garden near a lake. It is embellished with 9th and 10th century sculptures unearthed in the city. The scenic park is set in a stunning landscape with many hillocks and lakes adding beauty to the atmosphere. Rowing and paddling facilities along with other water sports are available in the lakes in the park.
Located 5 km west of the city, dating from 5th – 6th centuries AD it stands proof of the architectural excellence of the ancient Assam. The remains of stone temples have been discovered nearby Da Parbatia. It bears testimony to Tezpur’s ancient past and represents the earliest example of sculptural art in Assam. The doorframe of the temple belonging to 600 AD is the most ancient specimen that reflects the sculptural skills possessed in the olden days. It depicts Gupta style of sculpture. The site is now protected by the Archaeological Survey of India.
