Dibrugarh

Home / India / East India / Assam / Dibrugarh

The 'Tea City of India' is located on the upper-west region under the shadows of River Brahmaputra, Sibasagar and Tinsukia. Dibrugarh derived its name from Dibarumukh (as a renowned encampment of Ahoms during the Ahom-Sutiya War). Dibrugarh is considered as the major producer of tea. It usefully closes a loop between Kaziranga and the Ziro–Along–Pasighat route in Arunachal Pradesh, and is also the terminus (or starting point) for the fascinating ferry ride along the Brahmaputra to Pasighat. It is a great tourist destination for everyone who simply loves nature, tea, adventure, thrill and other activities. Dibrugarh is the only non - capital city in India to have the Rajdhani Express originating from and terminating in it. The reserves of oil and natural gas are the pillars of the economy of this city. As one of the most illustrious cities of Assam, Dibrugarh tourism has many things to offer to the traveller looking for peace, beauty, a tinge of history and lots of greenery.

Tourist Attraction

Tea Plantation

Drive through tea gardens dotted with shade trees where in season, the work force (typically women in Assam) dressed in saris patrol the rows of bushes plucking the tea. Tourists can watch as they deftly use the fingers and thumbs of each hand to nip off the 2 leaves and 1 bud at the tip of each stem, tossing it over their shoulders into baskets they carry on their backs. Visit the factory itself where the machinery and different processes involved in producing the finished leaf are undertaking. Tourists then have the opportunity to visit the tasting room where they learn about (and sample for themselves) the range of flavours of the different grades of tea produced.

Digboi

It is an oil town that can be traced to the early 18th century, when oil was first discovered here. The Digboi Refinery in North Eastern India is India's oldest refinery and was commissioned in 1901. Originally a part of Assam Oil Company, it became part of IndianOil in 1981. Digboi can proudly boast of two unique features: a 100 year old extant oilfield and the world's oldest operating oil refinery. The Digboi Refinery was set up at Digboi in 1901 by Assam Oil Company Ltd.
