Indore is the largest city in the state of Madhya Pradesh. It is located on the southern edge of Malwa Plateau and is about 190 km west of the state capital of Bhopal. It is situated on the banks of the River Khan and Sarawati. The city of Indore derived its name from the deity itself. The history of Indore is inseparable from the history of the Holkar State. The founder of the House of Holkars was Malhar Rao Holkar, born in 1693 AD. His soldierly qualities brought him to the forefront under the Peshwa and he was rewarded with the gift of territories comprising the Indore region. The bustling commercial center of Madhya Pradesh, Indore was princely state until 1947, ruled by the Maratha Holkar dynasty. Indore is known for its architectural splendor. Indore is a host to many industries, like automobile, textile, IT etc. The tales of the glorious past are narrated by these splendid historical monuments and cast a magical spell on the visitors.

CENTRAL MUSEUM

Central Museum, also known as the Indore Museum, is one of the most interesting buildings in Indore. The artefacts exhibited in the museum range from the prehistoric to the modern era. Museum has two galleries, out of which Gallery I houses all the artefacts from prehistoric period of Madhya Pradesh ranging from 5,000 to 4,000 BC. The Gallery II of this museum contains the exhibit of Hindu mythological carvings. The Indore Museum houses the finest collection of Parmar sculptures from Hinglajgarh. The Parmar style originated here and is characterized by proportioned figures, carefully and ornately depicted in stone. Central Museaum is a treat for the people who are genuinely fascinated by the history of India and the rich civilization that flourished here in the pre historic age. The museum is also known for its collection of coins, arms and armour.


LAL BAGH PALACE

Lal Bagh Palace was built by Maharaja Shivaji Rao Holkar, during 1886 and 1921. It is one of the grandest monuments the Holkar dynasty left Indore. A reflection of their taste, grandeur and lifestyle, its construction began in 1886 under Tukoji Rao Holkar II, and was carried out in three phases. The final phase was completed in 1921 under Tukoji Rao Holkar III. . It stands on the outskirts of the town, towards the southwest. It is a three storeyed building on the bank of the River Khan. Many royal receptions were held here. Spread over an area of 11,3311.98 sq. m, this palace holds exhibit of prehistoric artefacts and at one time it had the reputation of having one of the best rose gardens in the country.  


CHHATRIS

Chhatris are the tombs or cenotaphs erected in memory of dead Holkar rulers and their family members. Each chhatri is built on the burial site of the Holkar king or queen. The chhatri primarily comprises a dome shaped cenotaphs with pyramidal spires on the top. The Chhatris picturesquely poised on the Khan river banks near Rajawada are incomparable in terms of Maratha architecture and sculpture of their period. Chhatri Bagh is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Indore and it is the main collection of tombs housed in two compounds. Close by is the beautiful Bolia Sarkar's Chhatri constructed in 1858 AD in memory of Sardar Chimnaji Appa Sahib Bolia. During night, this park draws attention of numerous tourists, as the chhatris are illuminated and the fountain at artificial lake starts operating.
