Bhopal is capital of Madhya Pradesh and was founded in 11th century by Raja Bhoj but the present city was established by Afghan soldier, Dost Mohammed (1707-1740) and his descendants build Bhopal into a beautiful city. By the 18th century, it was held by a Muslim dynasty whose rulers included several remarkable women, the Begums of Bhopal. The city enjoys a moderate climate and is built on seven hills and round three lakes. Many dynasties have left their mark on the city. The antediluvian remains of the forts built by the Rajputs, Afghans and the Moguls speak of the battles of the past period.

Tourist Attraction

Taj-ul-Masjid

It is one of the most impressive monument in Bhopal. This large and pink washed mosque was built by Begum Sultan Jahan in 1878 but was left unfinished for almost a century before being completed in 1971. The enormous courtyard of the mosque has a dukka (water tanks) and vast prayer hall.

Bharat Bhavan

It was designed by architect Charles Correa and is a fabulous multi-arts centre. It contains a museum of Adivasi Art that displays striking exhibits. A gallery across the courtyard exhibits contemporary Indian art. Bharat Bhavan is also the venue for regular performances of theatre, music and dance in the evenings.

Van Vihar National Park

The most famous inhabitants of this large park, near the Upper Lake, are the white tigers. The zoo is also home to lions, leopards and Himalayan bears. About 445.21 hectare degraded hillock along with private village land was initiated in 1980 and finally in 1983 was notified as a National Park. The nearby Upper Lake adds its beauty to the landscape of this Park. The lake is more appealing particularly when thousands of migratory birds alight joyfully on the vast stretch of water during the cold days of winter.

Bhimbetka

Bhimbetka caves are located at about 46 kms south of Bhopal. The caves, surrounded by the northern fringe of the Vindhyan ranges, are believed to have provided shelter to the primitive man. The caves or the rock shelters belonging to the Neolithic age number more than 600. Inside most of these caves are the paintings that depict, in vivid panoramic detail, the life of the pre-historic cave dwellers.

Sanchi

Sanchi is known for its Stupas, monasteries, temples and pillars dating from the 3rd century B.C. to the 12th century A.D. It’s around 50 kms from Bhopal. The most famous of these monuments, the Sanchi Stupa 1, was originally built by the Mauryan Emperor Ashoka, the then governor of Ujjayini, whose wife Devi was the daughter of a merchant from adjacent Vidisha.
