Vadodara


Vadodara is situated on the banks of the Vishwamitri river, southeast of Ahmedabad and 139 km from state capital, Gandhinagar. Vadodara owes much of its splendor to Sayajirao Gaekwad III (1875-1939), a former ruler who transformed his principality into a progressive center of culture, education and industry. Today Vadodara is also known as Baroda, is a vibrant city with many interesting buildings, museums and parks. This industrial city of Vadodara was capital of one of the richest `princely states’ in pre-Independence India. British rule had a major influence on this region but Baroda remained a princely state until Independence and like many others it also joined the Dominion of India in 1947.

Laxmi Vilas Palace

This Indo-Saracenic pile was was built by Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III and designed by the English architect, Major Charles Mant. It took 12 years to build it and was finally completed in 1890. Still it is the residence of the erstwhile ruling family, though there was plans to convert parts of it into luxury hotel. This most impressive Raj-era palace in Gujarat, has elaborate interiors boast and well-maintained mosaics, chandeliers and artworks.


Champaner

This deserted city Champaner was founded in the 8th century by King Vanraj Chavda and situated at the foot of Pavagadh Hill. Champaner was originally the seat of a Rajput Chauhan dynasty and later Muslim ruler Mahmud Begada conquered it in 1484. He spent 23 years rebuilding the citadel, adding the palaces, tombs and mosques within its massive walls. Champaner remained the capital of Gujarat until 1535, when it was conquered by the Mughal emperor Humayun and thereafter it fell into gradual decline. Much of Champaner lies in ruins today, with the remains of many old mosques and palaces reflecting a blend of Islamic and Jain traditions like Jami Masjid, Pavagadh Fort and others.


Maharaja Fateh Singh Museum

Maharaja Fateh Singh Museum is located inside Lakshmi Vilas Palace and was established in 1961, is located in the Palace grounds. The building which was constructed as a school for the Maharaja's children is converted into museum today where a large number of works of art belonging to the Royal family are displayed. It has rare collection of paintings by the famous Indian artist, Raja Ravi Varma (1848 – 1906) and is known for its rich collection of artifacts belonging to the 19th and the 20th centuries. It contains works of art collected by Maharaja Sir Sayajirao Gaekwad III during his numerous trips out of India.


Sayaji Bagh

It is a beautiful park in the heart of the city, houses a Zoo, a Museum and Picture Gallery, a floral clock, a bandstand and a toy train for children and some fun rides and it also has rich flora of more that 98 species of trees. It was built on the banks of river Vishwamitri by Maharaja Sayajirao III in 1879 and named after him, but is also commonly known as Kamati Baug. Sayaji Baug is the largest garden in Western India, stretching over 113 acres.
