Bhavnagar was founded in 1724 by Bhavsinhji Gohil (1703–1764). It was the headquarters of a former princely state before it was merged into the Indian Union in 1948. Bhavnagar is a flourishing port in the south eastern coast of Saurashtra. Founded as a port in 1743, Bhavnagar is still an important trading post for the cotton goods manufactured in Gujarat. The city has many modern buildings, factories and educational institutions. Bhavnagar also has a memorial to the father of the nation, Gandhi Smriti. Bhavnagar having many large and small scale industries is an important city for trade. Alang world's largest ship breaking yard is located 30 kms away from Bhavnagar. An important holy place for Jain's, Palitana Jain temples are situated just few kms away from Bhavnagar.

It is semi-circular museum located in the southeast corner of the city, on the road to airport built in 1895. Barton Library and Museum is one of the oldest monuments in Bhavnagar. This museum houses the private collection of old books, manuscripts, coins, weapons and objects d’art of a British officer, Colonel Barton who served here in the 19th century.
The palace constructed in 1859 is set amidst 10 acre of wooded environment. It was the personal abode of Sir Takhat Singh of Nilambag and is now a luxury hotel. It highlights magnificent blend of western and Indian architectural style with a great banquet hall and peacocks in the garden. It is an architecture marvel in true sense and the hotel is popular among business as well as leisure travellers for its high hospitality standards.

Palitana is a city located 50 km southwest of Bhavnagar city and is a major pilgrimage centre for Jains. It is an extraordinary cluster of 1008 Jain temples with the most impressive of the main shrines is the 17th century Adinath Temple & the Adishvara Temple. Most of the temples date to the 16th century which were grouped into nine fortified clusters called tuks and named after the wealthy devotees who paid for their construction.
