Jagdalpur


Jagdalpur is a city in Bastar district in the Indian state of Chhattisgarh. In the times of yore, it was the capital of the former state of Bastar. The history of Jagdalpur takes us as deep into the past as Valmiki's Ramayana. It was the famous Dandakaranya through which Lord Rama is supposed to have passed. Scholars have also identified Valmiki's ashram here. One of the famous Hindu kings, Prithvi Raj Chauhan also ruled the Bastar city. The area has been ruled by the kings of numerous dynasties including the Nals, Kakatiyas and Chalukyas. Jagdalpur witnessed a tribal revolt in 1910, when the country was under the control of the British. The district is the homeland of the tribes of Marias and Murias. These colourful tribes have preserved their ancient culture to a great extent. The Jagdalpur city is famous for its traditional wooden handicrafts. The city is home to mountains, monuments, valleys, streams, waterfalls, forests etc. which makes it good destination for tourism.

Kanger Valley National Park

Based near river Kolab, at a distance of 27 Km from the town, Kanger Valley has amazing wilderness and rich biodiversity. It was founded in year 1982 and is surrounded by several villages in the north such as Nangalsar, Netanar and Milkulwada. For nature lovers and wildlife enthusiasts, it is a perfect place to be. The National Park is rich in its biodiversity and consists of fauna like Chinkara, Wild Boar, tiger, bear, snakes, jackals, Barking Deer, Black Buck, Wolf, Jackal, Fox, Bear, Langoor, Hyena, Krait and Panther. One can also spot numerous varieties of birds perching at the tree tops.


Chitrakot Waterfall

Chitrakot Waterfall is the broadest water fall and supposed to be the Niagara Falls of India. It is located 48 km from Jagdalpur and is accessible by road only. The attractive feature of the falls is the play of rainbow hues on it. During monsoon one can see its might. Around the falls, the area is largely forested and there is also a helipad nearby. The River Indravati falls from a height of 29 m to form this waterfall.
